Join Professor Melani Schroeter  for this interactive webinar in which he will discuss languages and the history of lexical borrowing. Focussing on French, German, Italian, and Spanish)

Professor Melani Schroeter specialises on the analysis of public and political discourse, including comparative analyses across languages. Her analyses often entail a focus on lexical patterns, for example around the discourse keyword 鈥榳oke鈥.

In this webinar she will discuss how no language is an island. In an interconnected world, languages come into contact with each other, and sometimes speakers of one language might encounter a word in another language that they find useful, for example because it denotes something new, or it succinctly labels a familiar experience. In such cases, words might get imported from one language into another.

The history of lexical borrowing is as old as the history of language contact. We will look at some examples of words that European languages.

This session will take place live so you will have the opportunity to ask questions throughout. However, if you are unable to attend at the scheduled time, if you register for the webinar, you will receive the recording via email.

Indian Ocean Environments Past and Present

Part of UoR Green Festival. The Indian Ocean's history brings together the richest diversity of human exchanges, migrations, and cultural patterns. Though it trails behind the other two major oceans by way of its size, it is estimated that around one third of the global population lives facing this vast sea. This ocean is also a coming together of a range of lifeforms. Across the World Ocean, species richness is greatest in the central Indo-Pacific belt, linking the eastern half of the Indian Ocean to East Asia and Australia. In order to provide some new insights into the environmental history of this busy maritime highway, this lecture works from history, outwards to other disciplines. It also concentrates on various environmental 'bits and pieces', fragmentary or elemental, in order to think through how humans and material from nature, including various species, interacted across this sea over the long-term.

Latinity as Humanity: Classical Humanism and White Supremacy. In this talk, we will encounter two early modern humanists, whose engagement with Latin literature challenged classical humanism's narrow conception of who counted as fully human. Juan Latino was a formerly enslaved Black African in sixteenth-century Spain, who rose to become the first Black professor of Latin. Phyllis Wheatley, also born into slavery in eighteenth-century New England, also gained her freedom in part through asserting her humanity through her Latinity. Everyone is welcome at our events.

Inequality in Healthcare: Why are Black people overrepresented in Mental Health Act Detentions?

Join us as we present our project, which focuses on addressing healthcare inequality. In the UK, Black people are much more likely to be detained under the Mental Health Act than white people. This means they can be held in hospital for mental health treatment without their consent.

Recent national data shows some improvement: Black people are now three and a half times more likely to be detained than white people, rather than five times. While this is progress, we still have a long way to go to achieve fairness. This significant inequality in healthcare needs to be addressed. Our project aims to understand why this happens and find ways to make mental health care fairer for Black people.
