In the Global Development Research Division, we undertake interdisciplinary research that promotes social justice and equality, while raising awareness of the global challenges surrounding the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Our Division brings together researchers from international development, development economics and human geography.

Our work is centred around five key themes.

• Politics of Environmental Governance – We explore the political aspects of environmental and developmental issues across countries of varying income levels – low, middle and high.
• Sustainable Livelihoods Futures – We seek to understand and support intergenerational dynamics, labour, behaviour change and economic development outcomes.
• Food, Climate and Agriculture – We investigate the complex relationships between food production and consumption, and how these practices affect lives and livelihoods at local, national, regional and global levels.
• Gender, Care and Wellbeing – We aim to build understanding of gender relations, questions of work, and how care for others and the environment impacts on local and global development.
• Empowerment and Participation – We prioritise research that is innovative, participatory and co-produced, ensuring real-world impact by empowering communities and stakeholders.
