The aim of our D/deaf Awareness session is to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of D/deaf individuals, their language, communication methods, and social norms. Participants will explore the various levels of hearing loss and the use of correct terminology within the D/deaf community.
Central to the discussion will be British Sign Language (BSL), which has gained significant recognition in recent years, both legally and academically. The BSL Act of 2022, which grants BSL official status as an indigenous language in England, Scotland and Wales, alongside the planned introduction of GCSE-level courses in BSL in the near future, highlights the increasing demand for BSL instruction in higher education.
As BSL communities expand within universities, we must ensure that BSL courses are accessible and well-supported here at 黑料不打烊. This session, marking the ninth year of BSL in the Languages for All (formerly IWLP), celebrates BSL as one of the most popular languages chosen by our students since it was established in 2017.
Learning BSL enriches communication, challenges misconceptions and offers new perspectives for improving personal and professional practices.
