Research projects

Jorge has been involved in several research projects. During his PhD studies (2028-2021), he was a part-time researcher in economics for projects funded by EIT Food Strategy, the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies, and Universidad Mayor (Chile). Since 2022, as a post-doctoral researcher, he has been involved in the next projects:

(2022) Jorge explored the economic viability and financial impacts of integrating robotics into UK agriculture, specifically focusing on automation in soft fruit farming.

(2023-2024) This innovative project evaluated the economic, financial and environmental performance of recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) integrated with Anaerobic Digestion (AD) for sustainable prawn farming integrated into arable and dairy farms in the UK.

Currently working on (2024-2025), evaluating multi-dimensional indicators (environmental, economic, and social) of livestock systems across Europe. His work involves extensive data analysis and modelling to inform sustainable agricultural practices. He also supports the PATHWAYS’ management team.

Background

Originally trained as an Agronomist (Chile), with an MSc in Agricultural Economics and a PhD in Agricultural, Environmental and Food Economics (ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ, UK). Early career in public policy as Agricultural Economist (Ministry of Agriculture, Chile) and later Head of the Department of Information Assurance (Ministry of Social Development, Chile), leading data-driven programmes and inter-agency platforms.

Research combines econometrics, data science, and machine learning with policy insights, focusing on how data and technology can enhance sustainability and productivity in the agri-food sector. Publications in peer-reviewed journals and reviewer for outlets including Applied Economics and the International Journal of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
