Introduction to lab safety for chemists - COSHH Risk Assessments

AIM:

The aim of this course is to enable academics, research staff, postgraduate students, technicians and laboratory managers to recognise and assess the risks in a chemistry laboratory.

OBJECTIVES : ON RETURNING TO THE WORK PLACE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO:

  • Understand the principles of activity based Risk Assessments
  • Identify the requirements of the COSHH Regulations
  • Recognise the presence of hazardous substances [hazard marking]
  • Understand the nature of exposure to hazardous substances
  • Be able to apply the hierarchy of control measures
  • Know what is required for selection of appropriate personal protective equipment [PPE]

COURSE CONTENT:

  • Introduction to the COSHH Regulations (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health)
  • Definition of hazardous substances and routes of entry into the body
  • Hazard identification: the use of Material Safety Data Sheets, hazard labels and other sources of information to identify hazards
  • Applying the hierarchy of control measures to laboratory hazards
  • A risk assessment group exercise to provide practice in completing assessments.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

Staff who carry out COSHH assessments. New Health & Safety Co-ordinators and new research project leaders in laboratory-based Schools; any of these who have not attended a similar session in the last 5 years would benefit from refresher training.

It is advisable to attend - Laboratory awareness: an introduction to safety in research - prior to this course.
